Mr Pan is 55 and used to run an import-export trading company in Hong Kong. He is now preparing to retire to Britain with his wife. He used to fly to Tokyo and Osaka several times a year for business, and whenever he completed a major deal, he would buy a bottle from Suntory's Hibiki range locally as a reward. With emigration approaching, the bottles he had treasured for years presented a difficult decision.

Seller Profile:

  • Seller: Mr Pan, 55, former owner of an import-export trading company
  • Reason for Selling: He and his wife are moving to Britain next month to enjoy retirement. Britain's strict duty-free allowances for incoming spirits, together with limited space in their new home, led him to declutter. He decided to part with the bottles he had painstakingly collected on business trips to Japan over more than a decade, entrusting them to people who would truly appreciate them.

Appraisal and Story: A Life in Whisky, with Every Drop Treasured

"These bottles have been with me for years. I used to fly to Tokyo and Osaka several times a year, and whenever I landed a big deal, I bought one as a reward." Mr Pan rested his hand on the Hibiki 17 Year Old Chrysanthemum and Crane Special Edition bottle, sounding reluctant to let it go. "I originally planned to open it when my daughter got married. But now we're making a big move, and I can't take so much with me. Rather than leave it gathering dust in a storage unit, I'd like Whisky Era to help find it a good home."

Our appraiser put on gloves and began carefully assessing these fine whiskies. Both the photographs Mr Pan brought and the bottles themselves showed that the collection was in excellent condition:

  1. Hibiki 17 Year Old Chrysanthemum and Crane, Design Special Edition: The decoration remained vivid. The lifelike white cranes and chrysanthemums symbolise longevity and integrity. This edition is now difficult to find on the market; with such an excellent fill level, this was certainly a collector-grade bottle.

  2. Hibiki 21 Year Old, Older Black-Label Edition with Box: It came with its original box, with a tidy, undamaged label. The whisky had a deep colour, representing the classic sherry-cask style.

  3. Hibiki 21 Year Old Mount Fuji Design: The most eye-catching treasure in the third photograph depicts Mount Fuji, a symbol of Japan, on the bottle. Mr Pan said he had been lucky enough to obtain it through a draw at an airport duty-free shop years earlier.

We explained the current Japanese whisky market to Mr Pan in detail. Although prices have fluctuated in recent years, specially decorated Hibiki design editions retain firm buyback values because of their artistic appeal and rarity. After hearing our professional analysis and transparent quotation, Mr Pan readily agreed.

"I did ask a few other places for prices. Some tried to push the price down from the outset; others couldn't even distinguish a special edition from a regular one," he said with a smile. "Your website came across as knowledgeable. After coming in and talking to you today, I feel most comfortable entrusting them to you."

Bottle Information and Valuation Ratings

To make the condition of this collection easier to understand, we compiled the following assessment (Note: valuation ratings are out of 5★ and are for reference only. Actual buyback prices fluctuate with the market):

Product Age Condition: Fill Level / Label / Seal Completeness of Accessories Valuation Rating Collectible Value
Hibiki Design Special Edition, Kacho Fugetsu 17 years Excellent fill level, above the neck; unmarked label and tight seal No box, bottle only ★★★★☆ Very high: discontinued decorative edition
Hibiki Older Gold-Flower Black-Label Edition 21 years Normal fill level; slight yellowing at the label corners from natural ageing; intact seal Original box included ★★★★☆ High: classic age statement
Hibiki Design Special Edition, Mount Fuji 21 years Excellent fill level; clear, unscratched decoration; very clean overall condition No box, bottle only ★★★★★ Very high: strong market interest

Whisky Era's Assessment: Although some bottles lacked their original boxes, they had been stored well, away from light and at a constant temperature, with very little evaporation. We therefore still offered a very favourable buyback price.

Whisky Era — Frequently Asked Questions

Q 1: Will you buy my whisky if the original box or certificate is missing? A: Absolutely. A complete original box and certificate generally command the highest buyback price, but some of Mr Pan's bottles were bottle-only examples. If the whisky has value, the seal is intact and the fill level is good, Whisky Era will still offer a reasonable buyback price assessed according to the edition and condition.

Q 2: If whisky has been stored for years and some has evaporated, causing a lower fill level, will that affect the buyback price? A: It can have a modest effect. Fill level is an important indicator when assessing older whisky. A substantial drop may indicate a compromised seal or unsuitable storage. Even with some evaporation, however, our professional appraisers will assess the bottle objectively rather than arbitrarily cutting the price sharply. We recommend storing bottles upright in a cool place.

Q 3: Can you arrange collection at my home if I live outside central Hong Kong, or have too many heavy bottles to transport? A: Of course. We offer flexible handover arrangements throughout Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories, including an appraisal at your home and immediate settlement in cash or by Faster Payment System (FPS). The process is designed to be safe, confidential and straightforward.
