WhatsApp photo quoteMr Cheung is a senior executive who has worked in finance in Central for many years. He is preparing a complete renovation of his longtime home, choosing a minimalist design to create a spacious, peaceful living environment with a contemplative feel. At the same time, his interests have gradually shifted from tasting spirits to collecting aged pu-erh tea.
Behind the Decision: Home Renovation and a Change in Lifestyle
The story centres on Mr Cheung, a senior executive with many years in Central's finance industry. He used to have a particular passion for Japanese whisky, filling his cabinet with treasures sourced from many places.
Last week, he contacted us on WhatsApp and explained that he was planning a complete renovation of the flat where he had lived for years. In conversations with his designer, he chose minimalism to create a more spacious, peaceful and contemplative home. As he had become more attentive to personal wellbeing in recent years, his interests had also shifted from tasting spirits to collecting aged pu-erh tea.
"Looking at these premium whiskies in the cabinet, I realised I rarely drink them now. Rather than let them sleep in a corner, I'd like to pass them to people who appreciate them while the market is favourable," he told us with a smile during our free appraisal at his home. He intended to put the substantial proceeds directly into the renovation budget for his dedicated tea room. We appreciated his decision to turn unused collectibles into the life he wanted.
At the Appraisal: Japanese Whisky Treasures Shaped by Time
Mr Cheung carefully took his treasured bottles from the cabinet. Seeing them in person was striking. Alongside popular regular expressions was a bottle that many whisky enthusiasts dream of owning.
-
The Centrepiece: Yamazaki 18 Year Old Mizunara 2017 Limited Edition (The Yamazaki 18 Years Old Mizunara 2017 Edition) It came in a finely made oak box, with a distinctive East Asian character. Mizunara oak grows slowly and is difficult to work, but can impart alluring sandalwood, fragrant agarwood and coconut notes. The 2017 limited edition is exceptionally scarce worldwide. We inspected the box's completeness, the label's Echizen washi paper, and the crucial closure and fill level. Mr Cheung had kept the bottles in a professional electronically temperature-controlled cabinet, and their condition was excellent.

-
Classic Regular Expressions: Yamazaki 18 Year Old, Black Box, and Hibiki 21 Year Old, Purple Box Next were two highly tradeable Japanese whiskies. Yamazaki 18 Year Old is known for deep autumn-fruit and dark-chocolate flavours; Hibiki 21 Year Old displays accomplished blending and has won numerous awards. Their boxes were almost entirely free from creases, and their gold label lettering shone as new, showing how carefully the collector had looked after them.

Our appraiser explained the current market to Mr Cheung in detail. Production constraints in Japanese whisky in recent years have kept prices for older expressions firm on the secondary market. The 2017 Mizunara in particular was an exceptional collectible with potential, although its actual price would still vary with the market and its condition.
Mr Cheung was delighted with our competitive professional quotation: "Your valuation is fair and transparent. These funds will let me upgrade the rosewood furniture in my tea room."
Professional Appraisal: Valuation Ratings
We provide transparent valuation ratings so Mr Cheung and other clients can understand our pricing basis. Below is an overview of the assessment for his collection:
| Assessment Item | Assessment Criteria | Observed Condition, Using Yamazaki 18 Mizunara as the Example | Score / Condition | Professional Notes |
| Capsule / Closure | Damage, cracks or signs of resealing | Tight closure; intact anti-counterfeit line; no cracking or oxidation. | Outstanding (A+) | An intact closure is the first defence against tampering and evaporation. This bottle was excellently preserved. |
| Whisky Fill Level | Whether evaporation has lowered the level | Fill level at the standard neck line, with no evident loss. | Very Good (A) | Stable temperature and humidity minimise evaporation. |
| Label Condition | Dirt, yellowing, mould or damage | Clean, unmarked washi label; clear lettering; no water marks or mould. | Outstanding (A+) | An excellent label is crucial to the collectible value of premium limited whisky. |
| Box and Accessories | Completeness of original box, booklet and other accessories | Intact original Mizunara wooden box, with clear grain, complete lining and information card. | Outstanding (A+) | Missing original boxes or accessories have a significant effect on limited-edition buyback prices. |
| Market Scarcity | Current availability and demand for this expression | 2017 limited edition, with very few offered to the market and strong international collector demand. | Very High (S) | A core factor in determining the final premium. |
5 Common Questions about Japanese Whisky Buyback
Clients often raise questions during the buyback process. Here are five common questions about older Japanese whiskies:
Q 1: Why is the buyback price of Yamazaki 18 Year Old Mizunara, 2017 Edition, so much higher than regular Yamazaki 18 Year Old? A: Mizunara takes a long time to grow, at least 200 years before it can be used for casks, and is prone to leakage, making cask construction very expensive. Suntory releases Mizunara limited editions only in selected years, such as 2017, and in very small quantities. Their distinctive, contemplative East Asian aromas and strong collectible appeal put secondary-market prices well above the regular expression.
Q 2: If whisky has no expiry date, does keeping it at home longer always increase its buyback price? A: This is a common misconception. Whisky stops maturing once bottled: an 18-year-old bottle kept for 10 years is still 18 years old, not 28. Buyback value depends on the edition and bottling year, current market demand and storage condition. Poor storage that causes evaporation or mould on the label can reduce its value over time instead.
Q 3: Will discarding the outer carton or wooden box affect the buyback price? A: Yes, substantially. For premium whiskies, especially popular gifts and collectibles such as Yamazaki 18 Year Old and Hibiki 21 Year Old, original boxes are key to their fair market value. Without a box, the bottle is treated as a bottle-only example and attracts some reduction in buyback price.
Q 4: What is the current market for Hibiki 21 Year Old and Yamazaki 18 Year Old? Is now a good time to sell? A: These two expressions are often described as the twin engines of Japanese whisky, with very steady demand. At the time of this appraisal, the author considered prices to have stabilised while remaining historically high. This was a market judgement made then; actual quotations still need to be checked against the edition, condition and transaction data. If, like Mr Cheung, you need renovation funds or wish to change collecting direction, this is an excellent opportunity to sell.
Q 5: How long does buyback take, and how do you pay? A: Our process is quick. First send clear photographs on WhatsApp or WeChat showing the front and back of the bottle, closure, fill level and box. We provide a preliminary online valuation. If both sides are satisfied with the price, arrange a handover at our premises or an appointment for collection at your home. After checking the bottles in person, we make immediate payment in full by cash, FPS or bank transfer, safely and reliably.
