Hakushu 1987 Single Cask Original Whisky: A Discontinued Single Cask Distilled in the Late Showa Era

This Hakushu 1987 single cask original whisky is a product under Suntory's "The Owner's Cask" project – where collectors personally selected entire casks for bottling with an exclusive cask number. This project is no longer active, making whiskies with this label discontinued single casks. Distilled in 1987, spanning from the late Showa to the early Heisei era, the whisky matured in the cask for decades. Coupled with the inherently rare outturn of single casks and their gradual consumption over time, the market circulation will only decrease year by year. For those in possession, this scarcity itself is the basis for negotiation.

About Hakushu

One of Hakushu's distinctive craft features is its simultaneous use of multiple still shapes and wooden (rather than stainless steel) fermentation tanks, allowing the whisky to retain more layers from natural microorganisms. It is a Japanese single malt whisky, known for its signature forest-like freshness, with some versions featuring light peat.

In terms of the market, after Hakushu 12 Year Old was discontinued in 2018, its secondary market price rose, and high-aged expressions like 18 Year Old and 25 Year Old have long been hard to find. Early single casks from the 1980s have become core targets in the collectors' market due to their limited existence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Besides Hakushu 1987, which other Japanese whiskies do you purchase?
We also purchase discontinued Karuizawa, high-aged Yamazaki, Hibiki 21 Year Old/30 Year Old, and various vintages of Macallan sherry casks, among other rare whiskies.

Q: My bottle has been in the liquor cabinet untouched, but the fill level has slightly decreased. Can I still sell it?
Yes. It's common for early bottlings stored for decades to experience slight "Angel's Share" evaporation. We will offer a reasonable price based on the proportion of lost liquid. Please send photos for a free initial estimate.

Q: Why do quotes fluctuate slightly?
Discontinued single casks are actively traded items, and their transaction prices fluctuate with the market. Our quotes are in line with current market ranges, not old prices.
