Karuizawa Noh 23 Year Old: A Rare, Aged Release from the Noh Series, Representing 1980s Mid-to-Late Unblended Whiskies

The 23 Year Old is one of the top representatives of the Noh series at auction, and a benchmark in the secondary market for 1980s Karuizawa unblended whiskies.

Karuizawa Brand and Market Background

Karuizawa is renowned for its long maturation in Spanish Oloroso sherry casks, producing whiskies with rich and deep flavors, featuring layers of dried fruit, Christmas pudding, dark chocolate, and cinnamon.

Karuizawa is one of the brands with the highest single-bottle transaction prices in the global whisky auction market, with some rare single casks fetching over seven-figure HKD at Bonhams and Sotheby's.

The 23-year maturation period allows the spirit to fully absorb the flavors from the wood while retaining sufficient character of the original spirit, considered by many collectors to be the "golden age range."

Single Cask bottling means that every bottle of spirit comes from the same oak cask. The bottle usually indicates the cask number, distillation year, bottling year, and the number of bottles produced. The rarity of single casks lies in the fact that once a cask is sold out, the exact same spirit no longer exists.

The market pricing logic for limited editions differs from regular editions: in addition to the quality of the spirit, packaging design, release quantity, and commemorative significance are all factored into the valuation. The completeness of accessories (original box, certificate, numbered card, etc.) has a particularly significant impact on the final transaction price.

Noh 23 Year Old Authentication Key Points

The relative proportions of the two figures in the 23 Year Old's two-character composition are a key verification point; counterfeits often have disproportionate characters.

Common authentication process: fill level (neck position is ideal), health of cork or screw cap, label printing layers, engraved bottle number, completeness of original wooden box and certificate. If any of these are missing, the valuation will be discounted accordingly, but it can still be accepted.

Market Depth of the Noh Series

The Karuizawa Noh series covers multiple vintages, with releases ranging from 12 to 23 years old. Each bottle is individually bottled as a Single Cask, with the main visual consistently featuring the art of Noh theatre.

Bonhams, Sotheby's, and Whisky Auctioneer feature the Noh series every quarter, making it a perennial favorite among late Karuizawa bottlings.
