Why is the Hanyu 10 of Clubs a must-have for mid-stage collectors completing a set?

In the Hanyu Playing Card Series, the 10 occupies a pivotal position among the mid-to-high number cards. Its value falls between that of the face cards and the low number cards, making it a frequently sought-after addition for collectors in the middle stages of completing a set. Its overall circulation is relatively stable. For sellers, this "mid-stage essential" steady demand often gives the 10 of Clubs more robust market support than its exposure at auctions might suggest.

The Legend of Hanyu and its Single Cask Logic

Hanyu is a legendary brand in the Japanese whisky auction market. The distillery, located in Saitama Prefecture, ceased production in 2000. After its closure, Ichiro Akuto took over the remaining raw whisky and bottled it cask by cask in single cask format—which is why it is classified as a Japanese Single Malt Whisky. Single cask means that each bottle comes from a single oak barrel, with the bottle indicating the cask number, distillation year, bottling year, and yield. Once that cask is sold out, the exact same liquid will no longer be available. The Playing Card Series is built upon this logic, with each card representing a unique and rare item.

Market Depth of the Card Series

After the Hanyu distillery ceased production, Ichiro reorganized the remaining raw whisky, dividing it into 54 cards based on the playing card theme, with each cask bottled individually. These were released sequentially starting in 2005, and the entire series was completed with the final card in 2014.

In terms of market depth, the complete Card Series set achieved a transaction record of HK$7,192,000 in Hong Kong in 2019. Individual cards are also actively traded, with Bonhams and Sotheby's featuring related lots annually.
