Mr Fong lives in Sha Tin, is in his early forties and works in IT. He enjoys a few drinks with friends after work. With a major home renovation approaching, his wife set a firm requirement: half the large whisky cabinet in the living room had to go, freeing space for their two sons' study. Looking over the Japanese whiskies he had kept for several years, he decided to take stock properly.

Four Hakushu whisky bottles in a line-up

Our appraiser was immediately impressed when he brought the bottles in. Alongside several discontinued and increasingly scarce Hakushus, including 10 Year Old, Heavily Peated, Bourbon Barrel and an older 12 Year Old, the clear standout was the Hakushu 18 Year Old Peated Malt Anniversary Edition.

Hakushu 18 year old Peated Malt bottle and green box

"A friend gave me this 18-year-old anniversary bottle last year. I knew it was rare, so I've kept it wrapped in cling film and hardly even touched the box," Mr Fong said.

Our appraiser put on gloves and explained each step of the inspection. Hakushu labels use traditional washi paper, which can develop yellow spots or mould in Hong Kong's humid climate. Mr Fong had looked after these bottles meticulously: the labels were flawless, without holes or tears. A professional high-intensity torch showed excellent neck-level fills throughout, with intact capsules and no signs of evaporation or fading.

The appraiser explained: "The Japanese whisky market is more measured now than a few years ago, but an anniversary edition such as this Hakushu 18, with its special significance and heavily peated limited-release character, still finds strong secondary-market demand. Your other discontinued Hakushus are also in excellent condition. Selling the whole range together lets us offer a very good price."

Mr Fong was pleased with our detailed analysis and quotation. He said another merchant had simply tried to push the price down and could not explain where the whisky's value lay. Both sides readily agreed, and we transferred payment immediately through FPS. The entire process took less than twenty minutes. He laughed: "I never expected clearing the whisky cabinet could help pay for some nice furniture too!"

Hakushu Whisky Buyback FAQ

1. Will you still buy my Hakushu if its original box is missing? Yes. A missing or damaged original box has some effect on the final price, approximately 5%-10%. If the bottle itself is in good condition and unopened, we will still provide a buyback valuation.

2. Hong Kong is humid, and my washi label has some yellow spots or mould. What should I do? This is one of the most common issues for Hong Kong collectors. Hakushu and Yamazaki labels are distinctive, and we accept minor mould spots or yellowing. Provided there is no extensive damage or faded lettering, the effect on price is modest. Our appraiser will offer a fair quotation based on the actual condition.

3. I do not know whether my Hakushu is a newer or older edition. How can I get a quotation? There is no need to worry. Photograph the bottle front, back label, closure and box, then send the pictures on WhatsApp. Our professional team can identify the edition and year at a glance and promptly provide a free preliminary valuation.

4. Must I come to your shop to sell? I am worried the bottles could break while I carry them around. Whisky Era offers flexible handover arrangements. You can visit our premises, or for larger quantities or higher-value bottles, arrange a specialist collection at your home. It is safe and confidential, allowing you to complete the transaction without going out.

5. How do you determine your purchase prices? Our quotations are transparent. Whisky Era tracks current completed-sale data across the global secondary spirits market, auctions and major trading platforms every day. We price according to actual market conditions on the day, removing middleman margins and providing competitive individual quotations based on the whisky's edition, condition and prevailing market.

Do you have unused whisky at home, or want to know what your cabinet is worth now? Take photographs and send them to us. Whisky Era offers a free, professional and prompt quotation service, with buyback valuation and immediate settlement by cash or transfer.
