The Collector's Story: Passing on Memories and Launching a New Vision
The seller, Mr Cheung, a pseudonym, is a retired publishing entrepreneur approaching seventy. From the late 1980s to early 1990s, his publishing house had extensive cultural exchanges and business collaborations with several major Japanese companies. These four exceptionally rare Suntory whiskies were commemorative gifts handed to him by leading Japanese business figures.
When Mr Cheung contacted us, he explained his purpose clearly. He was writing and self-publishing a memoir about Hong Kong's publishing industry in the 1980s and 1990s. To raise publication funds and establish a small local scholarship for young creators, he decided to release some of the most historically meaningful bottles in his safe.
'These whiskies have been with me for more than thirty years. Rather than leave them locked in a safe without seeing daylight, I would prefer to entrust them to professionals who understand their value and turn them into a more meaningful cultural legacy,' Mr Cheung said with a smile. When our team arrived at his home, carefully untied the red wrapping cloth and opened the specially made wooden box with its natural grain, we knew this would be an extraordinary buyback experience.
A Thorough Appraisal: Decoding Age Unknown and Noblesse Oblige
These four whiskies were far from ordinary. They represented important highlights in Suntory's history. Our team explained their backgrounds and valuations to Mr Cheung in detail:
- Age Unknown (へんこつ — Henkotsu/Stubbornness/My Personal History): The back labels of the two bottles on the left in the photograph read 'へんこつ' (Henkotsu). This whisky was specially blended to commemorate Keizo Saji's autobiography, My Personal History, serialised in the Nihon Keizai Shimbun. Henkotsu conveys persistence or stubbornness in Japanese, perfectly expressing Saji's lifelong determination to pursue whisky quality.
- Age Unknown (Commemorating the First Class Order of the Sacred Treasure): The second bottle from the right, with a blue back label, commemorates Keizo Saji receiving the Japanese government's First Class Order of the Sacred Treasure in 1989. It also carries no age statement, but according to experienced industry figures, much of its base whisky consists of exceptional Yamazaki stocks aged over 25 years.
- Noblesse Oblige 25-Year-Old: The bottle on the far right is a 25-year-old whisky specially blended for the 25th anniversary of Suntory's advertising subsidiary, Suntory Ad Ltd. 'Noblesse Oblige' means the obligations of nobility, symbolising corporate social responsibility and honour.

We explained the scarcity of these bottles in today's premium auction market to Mr Cheung in detail. He was surprised: he had thought them ordinary commemorative whiskies and had not realised the depth of corporate history and craftsmanship behind them. Impressed by our expertise and transparency, he immediately decided to sell the four treasures to us.

Bottle Valuation Scorecard
To make the buyback process completely transparent, we issued a detailed scorecard for this collection:
| Assessment item | Score (out of 10) | Condition notes |
| Label | 9.5 | Traditional Echizen washi-paper front labels well preserved and undamaged, with distinct natural deckled edges; back-label lettering clear and unfaded. |
| Capsule | 9.8 | Original black seals tight and uncracked, without leakage or oxidation damage at the top. |
| Fill Level (Ullage) | 9.5 | All four bottles retain excellent Neck fill levels, which can serve as a reference for assessing preservation. The closures, provenance and other physical details must still be checked. |
| Box/Cloth Completeness | 9.0 | Original wooden box bearing 'Age Unknown' and dedicated red wrapping cloth included. The box has extremely slight natural storage marks; overall condition is very good. |
| Rarity | 10 | All are not-for-sale commemorative gifts with exceptionally limited market circulation, combining premium collectibility with historical and cultural value. |
Overall Grade: S (Exceptional Collection)
(Note: The transaction amount is not disclosed to protect customer privacy, but the offer was at a premium collector level far above that for standard 25-year-old whiskies.)
Suntory Commemorative Whisky FAQs
Q 1: Why do these exceptional whiskies say 'Age Unknown' rather than give a specific age?
A: When Suntory produces particularly meaningful not-for-sale editions, it often gives its Master Blender maximum freedom. Without an age statement, the blender can freely select exceptionally old and rare stocks from the cellars for blending. However, the absence of an age statement does not itself establish that the whisky is older than 25 years, nor does it exempt the whisky from applicable production and labelling requirements. The original text's reference to stocks aged at least 25 years is an industry reference that still needs to be checked against the specific edition's details.
Q 2: Why are the edges of the front labels uneven?
A: This is not damage. The labels use traditional Japanese handmade Echizen washi paper. Deckled or torn edges are a natural characteristic of handmade paper. Each sheet has unique texture and edges, expressing the craftsmanship and prestige of the whisky.
Q 3: If I have only the bottle, without the wooden box and red cloth, will the price be affected?
A: Yes. With premium commemorative whisky of this kind, accessories such as wooden boxes, wrapping cloths and booklets are important parts of complete collectible value. Missing original accessories generally affects the final valuation by around 10% to 20%.
Q 4: How can I initially judge the value of an old whisky if I cannot read Japanese?
A: Look for key label terms such as special grade, not for sale or commemorative edition, together with closure condition and fill level. We strongly recommend sending clear front and back photographs directly to our specialist team for a free, precise initial online valuation.
Q 5: Do you offer home visits for high-value whisky of this kind?
A: Absolutely. For valuable rare bottles, we provide secure on-site appraisal and handover in Hong Kong with a strong emphasis on privacy. Once both parties confirm the valuation, we settle immediately, allowing the seller to complete the transaction safely and conveniently.
Every old bottle holds a distinctive history. If you have similar treasures at home requiring professional appraisal and buyback, contact us at any time. We promise a reasonable and competitive market offer for your collection.
