Karuizawa Samurai 30YO #6: The 6th bottle in the Samurai series, a crucial collector's node past the halfway point
The label features a samurai meditating in a seiza posture, exuding the calmest temperament. #6 has appeared more frequently at Bonhams Hong Kong in recent seasons, making it the strongest indicator of public market trends.
Karuizawa Brand and Market Background
The Karuizawa distillery ceased production in 2000, and the plant was dismantled in 2011. All remaining stock entered a "countdown to extinction" state – every bottle sold permanently reduces the global total stock by one.
Karuizawa is currently one of the brands with the highest single-bottle transaction prices in the global whiskey auction market. Some rare single casks have fetched over seven-figure Hong Kong dollars at Bonhams and Sotheby's.
During the maturation of high-aged whiskies (30 years and older), approximately 2-4% of the liquid evaporates annually due to the "Angel's Share," meaning that the final bottled liquid is only a fraction of what was initially put into the cask – the older the vintage, the greater the loss and the higher the rarity.
Single Cask bottling means that each bottle of liquid comes from the same oak cask. The bottle typically indicates the cask number, distillation year, bottling year, and number of bottles produced. The rarity of single casks lies in the fact that once a cask is sold out, the exact same liquid will no longer exist.

#6 Appraisal Focus
The samurai helmet crest on #6 is extremely detailed; pay attention to the depth of the lines of the family crest in the center. Water level (ideal at the bottleneck), health of cork or screw cap, label print layering, etched bottle number, and completeness of original wooden box and certificate. If any of these are missing, the valuation will be discounted accordingly, but it can still be accepted.
Market Depth of the Samurai Series
The Karuizawa Samurai series is a complete set of 30-year-old single cask bottlings from the Karuizawa distillery after it ceased production. The entire 10-bottle series features Ukiyo-e "Yakusha" samurai as its theme, with each bottle having a unique cask number, unique ABV, and unique Ukiyo-e samurai illustration.
Public auction records show that the individual transaction range for each bottle in the Samurai series far exceeds that of regular Karuizawa editions of the same age.
