A Retired Engineer's Milestone Collection: Four Balvenies Become a Travel Fund for Him and His Wife

Mr Lam is a retired senior engineer living in Happy Valley. He spent much of his life working on Hong Kong's infrastructure. Whenever he completed an important project or celebrated a family occasion, he would buy one or two bottles of whisky to mark it. Once he retired and his children moved out, he began thinking about how to organise the bottles he treasured at home.

By chance, Mr Lam found Whisky Era's buyback cases online. He sent several photographs, and a few Balvenies immediately caught our attention, as shown in Figure 1. Alongside a regular 21 Year Old PortWood were two rare PortWood Single Cask bottles with 1991 and 1993 designations, first and second from the left in Figure 1, and an immaculately preserved 30 Year Old in its original wooden box, at the far right of Figure 1, with box details in Figure 3. We realised this was an unusual collection.

A few days later, I, Whisky Era's buyback specialist, visited Mr Lam's Happy Valley home as arranged. He welcomed me warmly and carefully placed these four Balvenies on the coffee table.

First were the two Balvenie 21 Year Old PortWood Single Cask bottles with 1991 and 1993 designations. I examined the labels closely: their years and cask numbers were clear, the bottles were well filled and the closures intact, as shown in Figure 1. Mr Lam said he bought them in the early nineteen-nineties simply because they seemed distinctive, never imagining they would become such rare finds. Year-designated PortWood Single Cask releases form a well-known limited series from Balvenie; their final maturation in port casks brings distinctive fruit notes and depth. The 1991 and 1993 designations also carry particular historical significance for collectors.

Next was the Balvenie 30 Year Old, shown in Figure 3, housed in an elegant original wooden box. I opened the box and removed the bottle; Figure 3 shows the bottle details. Its label looked as clean as new, and its fill level was excellent. Balvenie 30 Year Old represents the culmination of thirty years of craftsmanship, with deep honey and vanilla notes and complex oak aromas that many whisky enthusiasts dream of tasting. The wooden box's condition directly affects collectible value, and Mr Lam's example was impeccably preserved.

Throughout the appraisal, I explained the identifying features and sources of value for each bottle in detail. Mr Lam listened closely and reflected on the power of time. Finally, I offered a detailed, reasonable buyback valuation based on each bottle's actual condition: the rarity of the vintage editions, the value of the 30 Year Old, and the excellent whisky and packaging condition.

Mr Lam expressed strong appreciation for our professionalism and honesty. He readily accepted our price and chose to complete the transaction immediately by bank transfer.
