WhatsApp photo quoteIn 2001, Karuizawa Pure Malt Whisky 12 Year Old won a gold medal at the International Wine & Spirit Competition in London. Japanese whisky would go on to triumph in competitions around the world and win their highest honours. Karuizawa subsequently kept setting new Japanese whisky price records at auction.

At the 2013 Tokyo International Bar Show/Whisky Live, Karuizawa 1960 single malt whisky sold for nearly ¥2 million a bottle (approximately RMB120,000), twice the price of the previous record holder, Yamazaki 50 Year Old.
In 2015, Karuizawa 1960 set another record at Bonhams in Hong Kong, selling for a hammer price of HK$918,750 (approximately RMB788,600), the highest auction price for a single bottle of Japanese whisky at that point. After this sale, Whisky Magazine named Karuizawa the ‘world's most investable whisky’ based on its Whisky Magazine Index (WMI). Macallan had held that distinction for the previous nine consecutive years.
In 2018, Karuizawa 1960 sold at Bonhams in Hong Kong for HK$2,450,000 (approximately RMB2.15 million).
With declining interest in whisky and poor commercial results, the company decided to stop Karuizawa production on 31 December 2000. The facilities were demolished in 2016 and the equipment sold. Each opened original bottle reduces surviving stock. The original article considers this supportive of scarcity appeal, but actual values still depend on version, condition and demand; fewer bottles do not guarantee appreciation. Limited original production, auction publicity and speculation have also contributed to rising prices.
People often say Karuizawa became more precious because it disappeared, but countless distilleries have closed. Karuizawa's worldwide renown must therefore rest on something exceptional. For much of its early existence, its purpose was simply to supply malt whisky for inexpensive Sanraku Ocean blends, making up only a small proportion and ultimately having little influence on those products. Even so, the company always placed great importance on Karuizawa Distillery.
