Karuizawa remains the undisputed leader, and rare models are still highly sought after.
Recently, the Chichibu Paris edition of Whisky Live 2022 has surfaced. It is a blend of nine casks of Chichibu peated whisky that have been aged for six or seven years, primarily in bourbon casks. It has an alcohol content of 51.5% ABV, a volume of 700ml, and is limited to 1900 bottles.

The label design features one of the groundbreaking works "36 Views of the Eiffel Tower" by French Art Nouveau artist Henri Rivière, which was inspired by the work "36 Views of Mount Fuji" by renowned Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai, creating a natural and harmonious connection with this limited-edition bottle.
Although Chichibu has been established for less than 20 years, it has become a rising star brand in the Japanese leather goods industry thanks to its unique barrel strategy and avant-garde promotional methods.

This batch of Chichibu Malt Dream Cask bourbon single cask whisky is virtually unavailable both domestically and internationally, fetching ¥31,888, slightly higher than other whiskies in the same series. This series represents the high standards of oak barrel management at the Chichibu distillery; unfortunately, only 125 bottles were produced, so collect them while you can.

As a highly valuable collectible, Karuizawa is considered a pillar of Japanese whisky's global reputation. This Hong Kong Harbour City limited edition Karuizawa 35-year-old is being auctioned for the first time this year. Going back, the last auction record on Whiskyauctioneer was in June 2019, when it sold for ¥56,497.14. There was a gap of over a year after that, until it reappeared on Sotheby's auction website in November 2021, with the price having risen to ¥135,316.5. This time, it sold for ¥221,000 on WineCricket, achieving a good price. This small-scale victory also raises hopes for a recovery in market sentiment!

There's no doubt about the quality of Yamazaki's owner's cask. This Yamazaki owner's cask WM0027, specially bottled for Union's 50th anniversary, has only appeared in fewer than ten auctions on major auction websites in recent years. Among them, Bonhams auctioned it twice in the first and second halves of 2018, with the final price dropping from ¥90,211 to ¥72,168.8. Then, in June 2019, it continued its downward slide at Whiskyauctioneer, fetching ¥54,075.83. This time, it managed to close at ¥182,000 on WineCricket. In the current market environment, this shows that Yamazaki's ability to rise and resist price drops has increased significantly, and overall, Yamazaki, with its strong competitiveness, is expected to continue its trend of low supply and rising prices.

This limited-edition Komagatake 30-year-old purple label set sold for ¥80,000. Based on the previous auction price of ¥128,000 for a purple, pink, and yellow label Komagatake set, this ¥80,000 is an exceptionally high price. With only 163 bottles available, its immense potential value foreshadows a highly sought-after auction market!

As shown in the image above, the auction price of this Hakushu Sherry Cask #3C40790 tended to be between ¥28,000 and ¥26,000 in 2018-2019. It dropped to ¥18,000 at the beginning of 2020, and then rose back to the ¥28,000 level just one year later. This time, it was auctioned on WineCricket.com for ¥61,000, which significantly outperformed the previous market price, which is a pleasant surprise. Congratulations to the bidder!
In addition to the aforementioned beers, other Karuizawa beers also performed strongly, such as the Ring Label #6426 (¥190,000), the Ultimate Four-Color Sherry Cask Set (¥121,888), and several "Noh Series" beers, all of which maintained their strong leading positions, with price increases largely in line with expectations. Yamazaki's owner-owned cask 4R70055 fetched ¥32,400 and ¥33,000 respectively this round, showing a slight decline compared to previous rounds, but a market recovery is still anticipated…
