Karuizawa Samurai 30YO #9: The 9th bottle in the Samurai Series, the prelude to the grand finale of the set
The samurai on the label bows in contemplation, and the color tone turns cold and dark. Due to its position close to the finale, #9 is often regarded as a key indicator of "entering the final stage" in the entire transaction.
Karuizawa Brand and Market Background
Karuizawa is known for its long maturation in Spanish Oloroso sherry casks, producing a rich and deep flavor profile with layers of dried fruit, Christmas pudding, dark chocolate, and cinnamon.
Karuizawa is currently one of the brands with the highest single-bottle transaction prices in the global whisky auction market, with some rare single casks exceeding HKD seven figures at Bonhams and Sotheby's.
During the maturation process of high-aged whiskies (30 years and older), approximately 2-4% of the liquid evaporates each year due to the "Angel's Share," meaning that the final bottled liquid is only a fraction of what was initially put into the cask—the longer the age, the greater the loss and the higher the rarity.
Single cask bottling means that each bottle of liquid comes from the same oak barrel. The bottle usually indicates the cask number, distillation year, bottling year, and the number of bottles produced. The scarcity of single casks lies in the fact that once the cask is sold out, the identical liquid will no longer exist.

#9 Key Appraisal Points
The samurai's robe on #9 has the richest shadow layers; pay attention to the gradient printing on the hem of the robe. Water level (the bottleneck position is ideal), health of the cork or screw cap, printing layers of the label, engraved bottle number, and completeness of the original wooden box and certificate. If any of these are missing, the estimated value will be discounted to a certain extent, but it can still be accepted.
Market Depth of the Samurai Series
The Karuizawa Samurai Series is a complete set of 30-year-old single cask bottlings from the Karuizawa distillery after it ceased production. The entire set of 10 bottles features Ukiyo-e "Yakusha" samurai as its theme, with each bottle having an independent cask number, independent ABV, and an independent Ukiyo-e samurai illustration.
The Samurai Series has repeatedly set new transaction records at Bonhams Hong Kong, Sotheby's London, and Whisky Auctioneer.
