Yamazaki is one of Japan's most famous whiskies, and the Yamazaki Distillery was Japan's first whisky distillery.
In 1923, Shinjiro Torii, the founder of Suntory, saw the business opportunity in whisky brewing and began to build Japan's first whisky distillery in the southwest of Kyoto.
They invited Masataka Taketsuru (the father of Japanese whisky), who had studied whisky making techniques in Scotland, to serve as the factory manager.
The first 12-year-old side of the Yamazaki series of whiskies was released in 1984.
