Karuizawa, the "Conti" of whiskies
In 2001, the Karuizawa Pure Malt Whisky 12 Years Old won a gold medal at the International Wine & Spirit Competition in London, marking the beginning of Japanese whiskies conquering various international competitions and winning top honors worldwide. Since then, Karuizawa has continuously set new records for the highest prices of Japanese whisky at auctions.

At the 2013 Tokyo International Bar Show/Whisky Live, a bottle of Karuizawa 1960 Single Malt Whisky was sold for nearly 2 million Japanese Yen (approximately 120,000 RMB), doubling the price of the previous record holder, Yamazaki 50 Year Old.
In 2015, the Karuizawa 1960 set another new record, selling for HKD 918,750 (approximately 788,600 RMB) at a Bonhams auction in Hong Kong, establishing the highest auction price for a single bottle of Japanese whisky. Following this auction, Whisky Magazine, based on its Whisky Magazine Index (WMI), ranked Karuizawa as the "most valuable whisky for investment globally." This honor had previously been held by Macallan for nine consecutive years.
In 2018, the Karuizawa 1960 sold for HKD 2,450,000 (approximately 2.15 million RMB) at a Bonhams auction in Hong Kong.
Due to a decline in interest in whisky and poor performance at the time, the company decided to cease production of Karuizawa on December 31, 2000, and the factory was shut down. In 2016, the factory was razed to the ground, and all its facilities were auctioned off. The Karuizawa whiskies currently available on the market are becoming rarer with each bottle consumed. Each consumed bottle means an increase in the value of the remaining stock. Coupled with its inherently limited production, annual auction news, and various speculations, prices continue to soar.
It is often said that Karuizawa is more precious because it disappeared, but while countless distilleries have closed, Karuizawa's global fame is due to its extraordinary qualities. Although for a long time at the beginning, Karuizawa's sole purpose was to provide malt whisky for Sanraku Ocean's inexpensive blended whiskies (a very small proportion, even negligible impact on the final product), the distillery always valued the Karuizawa distillery.
